Friends of the University of Vienna, Inc.

Friends of the University of Vienna, Inc. (“Friends of UV,” “we,” or “us”) is a nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Delaware and is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and as a public charity under Sections 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi).

We are committed to protecting the privacy of our donors.

This notice explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information in connection with your contribution.

Who Is Responsible for Your Data?

Friends of the University of Vienna, Inc. is the data controller for personal information collected in connection with the Events. We operate independently as a U.S. nonprofit organization. Our board of directors exercises full discretion and oversight over how personal data collected through our activities is used.

We may collect the following personal information when make a contribution to Friends of the University of Vienna, Inc.

Name and contact information (email address, mailing address, phone number)
Donation history and philanthropic interests (where applicable)
Payment information for processing donations (credit card or bank account data), handled only by secure payment processors

Communicate with you about Friends of UV programs and fundraising activities

Data controller

The controller responsible for the processing of your personal data is the University of Vienna, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Vienna, Austria.

What data we collect

In connection with your donation, we process the following personal data: name, address, e-mail address, telephone number (optional), payment information, as well as the donation amount and purpose.

Purposes and legal bases of processing

Fulfilment of tax and accounting obligations, in particular the issuance of donation receipts/confirmations (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR – legal obligation)
Maintaining the donor relationship, sending reports on the use of your donation, and information about the work of the University of Vienna (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR – legitimate interest, or, where applicable, based on your consent pursuant to Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR)
Sending newsletters and invitations only with your explicit consent

Disclosure to third parties

Your data will not be sold to third parties. Disclosure takes place exclusively to:

The payment service provider, for the purpose of processing your donation
Tax advisors or auditors, to the extent legally required
IT service providers acting on behalf of the University of Vienna (processors pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR)

Retention period

We store your data only for as long as necessary for the purposes stated above or for as long as statutory retention obligations apply (e.g., 7 years for accounting records under Austrian law).

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, and restriction of processing, as well as the right to data portability. Where processing is based on your consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time with effect for the future. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzbehörde, dsb.gv.at).
